DC – Service & Activities
(National Project – “Domestic Violence Awareness”), members of the Washington, DC chapter prepared 100 individual personal hygiene kits. Each kit included mouthwash, deodorant, toothpaste, toothbrush, shampoo/body wash and hand/body lotion. On Thursday, May 4, 2017, the members met at the Harriet Tubman Women’s Emergency Shelter in Washington, DC to personally distribute the kits to the women as they checked into the shelter for the evening. The look of appreciation from the women was so heartfelt and at that very moment we realized that our wonderful acts of kindness made a BIG DIFFERENCE IN THE LIVES OF THESE WOMEN; KNOWING SOMEONE REALLY CARES.
For the September monthly meeting, members of the Washington, DC Chapter enjoyed an afternoon of painting and catching up after our summer break with. The owner of Splash Art Center in Washington, DC, instructed us on designing and painting our own unique style of “The Hat Lady”. As illustrated in the picture, many beautiful designs were painted by the ladies. Absolute fun was had by all. WHAT AN EXCITING WAY TO KICK OFF OUR NEW CLUB YEAR!!!
Upcoming Event:
On Saturday, August 19, 2017 the ladies of Club Dejouir, Inc, – Washington, DC Chapter will host its Crab Feast Fundraiser to benefit the Harriet Tubman Women’s Emergency Shelter.
Richmond – Service & Activities
National Project
The Richmond chapter has selected the YWCA Women’s Shelter as our National Project. We selected the YWCA because of the excellent programs offered in our community for battered women and children in this area. The YWCA provides emergency and on-going services for survivors of sexual assault, domestic violence and intimate partner violence.
Our project for this year is to provide a variety of personal toiletries and supplies for the women. These include soaps, deodorants, powders, personal sanitary supplies, wash cloths, towels, hair supplies, writing tools, books, and other necessities just to name a few. A list of supplies needed were given to each member which they have been collecting all year. All the supplies are brand new and in original wrappings.
These items will be collected at our June meeting and delivered shortly after by the chapter members to the YWCA headquarters. We also purchased beautiful large floral tote bags for the women to store their personals and their new toiletries.
It is our goal to extend this year’s project for our next club year. This may include providing some school supplies and or small comforting toys for the children of battered women. The YWCA reports a need also for bed and bath linens such as blankets, pillows, towels, wash cloths, etc.
We are grateful to help the YWCA meet the needs of families receiving services from Richmond. Our in-kind donations allow our chapter to participate, in a small way, help to domestic survivors in emergency housing.

Columbia – Service & Activities
Columbia started the club year with a successful PaintNite event in October 2016. The chapter had over 40 attendees who joined us to nurture our “inner artist”. We created our own “masterpieces” while enjoying good food, company, fun and laughs. A portion of the proceeds went to the “Foundation for Women’s Cancer.”
Support the National Project! Columbia Chapter raised over $577 for the 2017 HopeBowl Fundraiser sponsored by HopeWorks of Columbia, Maryland. The Columbia team enjoyed a day full of Dejouir as we bowled a few strikes & spares after the Executive Meeting. Our efforts helped to increase awareness and support those impacted by sexual and domestic violence.
As we prepare to bring the chapter year to a close, we will meet and have our last social activity at Baltimore’s Center Stage to see Toni Morrison’s “Jazz” on June 11, 2017.
